Kanisa: Thinking Together. Acting Together.
Make a positive impact on your community and society
Mission - Vision
Mission
Initiative Kanisa’s mission is to promote the personal, social, and professional development of young people of African descent through enriching social and educational activities.
Vision
Inspiring a generation of leaders and people who are aware of and committed to the development of their community, their city and of Canada.
Challenges

The education and labour market experiences of Canadian-born and immigrant people of African descent, especially those with at least one parent born in Africa (African-origin), those with at least one parent born in the Caribbean (Caribbean-origin) and those whose parents were both born in Canada (Canadian-origin), are just diverse. In addition, the socioeconomic conditions of this population, including rates of employment and earnings, are generally lower than the non-Indigenous, non-racialized population.
When it comes to young people of African descent, especially those who immigrate to Canada to study or work, many of them are facing the following problems:
- Career counseling: without access to career counseling, many young people were unable to navigate the complexities of the job market, make informed decisions about their future, or identify and pursue their career goals.
- Work experience: lack of internships and practical work experiences further disadvantaged them, as they were unable to gain the hands-on skills and real-world insights that are critical for career advancement.
- Networking opportunities: networking opportunities, which are essential for building professional relationships and accessing job opportunities, are also scarce, leaving this youth isolated and unsupported in their career journeys.
Our Solution
Through our targeted social and educational programs, we aim to empower over youth, providing them with the skills, mentorship, and opportunities needed to succeed professionally, significantly reducing this disparity and fostering a brighter future for our community.
We also aim to create role models and mentors for the next generation, perpetuating a cycle of aspirations and opportunities.
In practice, our solution involves:
Academic Tutoring

Skills Training and Workshops

Career Counseling

Mentorship

Networking Activities

Hear What People Have to Say
“The personal finance workshop was useful for me from the point of view of using credit cards. It lifted me out of ignorance. Today, I can use my credit card well without affecting it and am able to keep my credit in good condition. I’ll be able to help others with the advice I received at this workshop, so that they can avoid destroying their credit.”
“When I arrived in Quebec in 2022, I immediately wanted to work in
my field of study. Unfortunately, my diploma from my home country
wasn’t recognized and I despaired. One day, my friend invited me to attend a Kanisa workshop on job hunting. It was there that I learned about the experiences of others in my situation, and finally received the information I needed to take the right steps. Thank you Kanisa!”
“I was invited to take part in a conference on personal finance. Thanks to this activity, I better understand the usefulness of credit cards, savings, and the importance of having a balanced budget as well as a clear financial goal.”
“It’s always a pleasure for me to attend the workshops organized by Kanisa. The discussions are always relevant and very beneficial to my personal and professional development. I’ve even met other young
people who have faced the same professional difficulties as I have. In the end, I came away with lasting solutions.”
